The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most respected Hindu pilgrimages and needs a lot of detailed planning when travelling due to high mountains, large distances, and changing weather. Road transport is more flexible for groups, allows scenic stops, and is more comfortable than public transport.
The full road trip from Delhi is approximately 1,600-1,800 km over 12 days, with daily driving times of 6–10 hours depending on the terrain and access to the temples.
Typical travel flow:
Delhi → Haridwar → Barkot → Yamunotri → Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Guptkashi → Kedarnath → Badrinath → Rudraprayag → Haridwar → Delhi.
This itinerary is designed to balance the performance of the temples, the time spent driving in the mountains, and sufficient rest for the group. The driver will stay with the group over the duration of the trip and assist in transferring from hotel to hotel, routing places, and directing daily excursions.
Your Char Dham journey begins with pickup from Delhi airport, railway station or hotel early in the morning. Our experienced hill driver will meet your group, assist with luggage and brief you about the journey ahead. The drive to Haridwar takes around 5–6 hours via express highway. After hotel check-in and rest, you can attend the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, one of the most spiritual experiences of the trip.
After breakfast, the group departs for Barkot, the gateway to Yamunotri. The scenic drive passes through Mussoorie hills, Kempty Falls and Yamuna Valley, offering beautiful mountain views and photo stops. Travel duration is around 7–8 hours due to winding hill roads. On arrival in Barkot, our driver assists with hotel check-in so the group can relax and prepare for the Yamunotri trek the next day.
Early morning drive to Janki Chatti, the starting point for the Yamunotri trek. From here, travellers can trek or hire pony/palki services to reach the Yamunotri Temple. After darshan After spending time near the holy hot springs, the group returns to Barkot by evening. This day involves moderate walking, and our driver remains available for coordination and pickup.
After breakfast, we will depart for Uttarkashi, a beautiful town situated along the Bhagirathi River. The drive takes about 6–7 hours through scenic mountain landscapes and small villages. After hotel check-in, travellers can visit the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi and rest for the next day’s Gangotri visit.
Today, there is an early morning departure to the Gangotri Temple, which is located at the source of the River Ganga. The route to the temple goes through Harsil Valley, which is one of the most beautiful places in Uttarakhand. After doing darshan at the temple and spending some time by the river, the group will return to Uttarkashi for an overnight stay. The day will be filled with stunning views of the Himalayas and spiritual significance.
This is one of the longest travel days as the group heads to Guptkashi, the base area of Kedarnath. It takes around 8-9 hours to drive through mountain highways and river valleys. On arrival, our driver assists with hotel check-in and guides the Kedarnath trek planned for the next day.
Morning transfer to Sonprayag/Gaurikund, where the Kedarnath trek begins. Travellers can trek or use pony/palki/helicopter services to reach Kedarnath Temple. This sacred shrine sits high in the Himalayas, and visiting it is the highlight of the Char Dham journey. Overnight stay near the Kedarnath temple area.
After morning darshan, the group returns from the Kedarnath trek to Gaurikund and drives back to Guptkashi. We keep this day lighter to allow for proper rest after the trek. The evening is free for relaxation and preparation for the Badrinath journey.
Drive towards Badrinath Temple via Joshimath, passing scenic Himalayan landscapes and river confluences. After hotel check-in, travellers visit the temple for evening darshan and explore nearby local markets. The spiritual atmosphere of Badrinath makes this day special for pilgrims.
After a morning temple visit, we drove towards Rudraprayag. En route, travellers can visit Mana Village, the last Indian village near the Tibet border, and stop again at Joshimath for sightseeing. Overnight stay at Rudraprayag.
After eating breakfast, you will travel for approximately 7-8 hours through river valleys and hill towns on your way back to Haridwar. You will arrive to relax or go back to the Ganga Aarti if you have time to do so.
After breakfast, the tour group returns to Delhi. The driver will drop passengers off at the airport, train station, or hotel where the tour ends, and they will have created memories from the Char Dham Yatra and traveled safely home.
By travelling by road, we can be flexible with the timing of our darshan at the temples, as well as have many options for breaks or changing plans due to the weather, including assistance for senior citizens and families as they travel together.
Mountain travel demands stability, space, and experienced driving. Groups traveling together benefit greatly from a dedicated vehicle designed for mountain roads.

A1. Char Dham Yatra involves long mountain drives and one challenging trek. Travellers usually spend 6–10 hours driving daily, and the Kedarnath visit includes a 16–18 km trek or pony/helicopter option. With proper rest stops, gradual altitude gain and a paced itinerary, most senior travellers complete the journey comfortably.
A2. Road delays are common in the Char Dham route. Mountain roads may close temporarily due to landslides, heavy rain or traffic congestion. A flexible itinerary with buffer time allows schedule adjustments without missing temple visits or overnight stays.
A3. Yes, mild altitude symptoms can occur. Travellers may experience headache, fatigue or breathlessness due to rapid height gain. Staying hydrated, resting well and avoiding rushed travel significantly reduces the risk.
A4. Yes, helicopter services depend on weather conditions. Flights may be delayed or cancelled due to fog, rain or strong winds. Travellers should keep trek or pony options as backup to avoid itinerary disruption.
A5. Peak season sees heavy pilgrim traffic. Travel time increases due to road congestion, temple queues and parking delays. Starting early each day and using a single group vehicle helps maintain schedule and reduce stress.
A6. One vehicle simplifies the entire journey. It keeps the group together, reduces coordination stress, provides better luggage space and makes long mountain drives more comfortable for families and senior travellers.
A7. Always verify the travel company before payment. Safe booking practices include:
Confirming business details and GST
Avoiding payment to personal accounts
Requesting proper invoice and itinerary
These steps reduce the risk of online travel scams.
