Described as a queen of hill station on South, Ooty is a small city-state, which has certain sheen of wealth in terms of natural beauty.  Luxury hotels, and fine dining are the necessary part of travelling to Ooty. With excellent public transportation system, roaming around in the city is convenient and easy.

Udhagamandalam and sometimes Ootacamund, Ooty came under the occupation of the East India Company around the end of the 18th century. The Blue Mountains’ are the major responsible factor for this town’s popularity and sees the footfall of hundreds of travellers every year.

In 1848, the government Botanical Gardens was inaugurated. The terraced garden is maintained by the Tamil nadu horticultural society and is sprawled over 22 hectares.

The Tea Factory is frequented by tourists although there is not much to see or do there. The process of fresh tea leaves and packaging is what the factory does and interested tourists can see the entire procedure.

A visit to Doddabetta Peak is all about the picturesque Nilgiris. This place offers amazing trek spots and plenty of quiet and picturesque locations to solitary wanderers. The tourism department of Tamil Nadu maintains this place and it is wise to carry a  good pair of binoculars to enjoy the spectacular view.

An interesting place to visit is Avalanche Lake which is yet another wanderer’s haven. The mesmerizing landscape makes it one of the finest places for a quick campsite. Youngsters can also enjoy trout fishing. The place derived its name from a landslide that occurred sometime in the early 1800’s.

Ooty Lake covers an area of around 65 acres, which is a manmade wonder and was formed in 1824.  It features a boathouse, which offers boating facilities to the visitors and is famous for hosting boat races during the summer month of May. Mudumalai National Park is a famous Tiger Reserve which has plethora of wildlife and bird species.

St. Stephen’s Church was founded in the year 1829 and is counted amongst the oldest churches in Nilgiris.  Depicting several religious scenes through glass painting and wooden works, it is located on the road to Mysore in Ooty. Enough of greenery around the church makes it one of the finest places to visit. Stained glasses and the wooden beams add to its architectural beauty. Mariamman Temple is one of the other colourful places to visit where the local Hindu deity is worshipped. Ooty Mariamman Temple Festival is celebrated with much fervour in April.

Mukurthi National Park is possibly the best weekend getaways from Ooty. Orchids, ferns and rhododendron form the major of the reserve here. Short trekking routes make the visit more adventurous. Ooty Golf Course is located at a height of 7200 ft, and is one of the oldest golf clubs of the country. Spread over 193.56 acres, this is one of the popular tourist spot. Kalhatty Waterfalls is about 13 km from Ooty city and is located at a height of around 2000m. With varied rivulets streaming their way down through lush green mountains, this is one of the most scenic place of Ooty.

A must ride of the Ooty Mountain Railway has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site. The railways were built by the British in 1908 and are still powered with traditional steam engines.
